FNU launches Introduction Martial Arts Programme

Fiji National University’s College of Humanities and Education has launched the Introduction (Multi) Martial Arts Programme at the Nasinu Campus.

The purpose of this Certificate Programme is to equip participants with a thorough understanding and practical proficiency in a diverse range of Martial Arts disciplines. By offering training in Hapkido, Hosinsul, Haidong Gumdo, Tae Kwon Do, Wuzhu Sanda Boxing, and Judo, this programme aims to foster a holistic approach to Martial Arts training, enabling participants to enhance their physical fitness, mental, spiritual, and self-defence capabilities.

Chief Guest and Professor in Teacher Education at the College of Humanities and Education, Professor Govinda Lingam, said Martial Arts has always been more than just a physical activity; it is a journey of personal transformation.

“Today, we are not just launching a programme, but we are opening the doors to new opportunities for self-discipline, physical fitness, mental resilience, and personal growth,” Professor Lingam said.

“Martial Arts is for everyone – regardless of your age, background, or physical ability. I am certain that Captain Korovou will ensure that a safe and supportive environment is provided, where each student can learn at their own pace, feel empowered, and be part of the Fiji National University that values mutual respect and growth.

“What makes this programme so special is not just the technical skills that will be taught, but the life lessons that come with them. Martial Arts is a way of life – it teaches us how to remain calm in the face of adversity, how to overcome challenges with focus and determination, and how to build a mindset that values continuous self-improvement.”

CHE Associate Dean Learning and Teacher, Dr Victor Alasa, said the initiative marked a significant milestone in the University’s commitment to providing a diverse range of educational opportunities that cater to the interests and aspirations of our students.

“This short course programme will provide students with a comprehensive understanding of various Martial Arts techniques. Our experienced instructors will guide students through rigorous training, ensuring they develop the necessary skills and confidence,” Dr Alasa said.

“We encourage all students to consider enrolling in this exciting programme offered by our College of Humanities and Education Department of Secondary and Sports Education.”

CHE’s Head of Department, Secondary and Sports Education, Suraj Singh, said with society facing increasingly complex challenges, the values and skills imparted by martial arts are more relevant now.

This is a short course running for six weeks, and the purpose of this certificate programme is to equip participants with a thorough understanding and practical proficiency in a diverse range of martial arts, this programme aims to foster a holistic approach to martial arts training, enabling participants to enhance their physical fitness, self-defence capabilities and overall well-being,” Singh said.

“Martial Arts is not only about attacking and defending but also changes how people think. Martial arts help people learn how to handle difficult moments and keep their composure all the time. This makes people humble and positive-minded.”

Captain Tevita Korovou, who is the programme instructor, comes from a military background.
